second letter in second word is either U or R

16a Something to do with lips in rhyme for .....

17a .... lines against the Irish.  The answer to this is verse.

So is 16 a prose - makes sense with 17a or purse - makes sense with lips.

7d   Gorsebush  ie Gore and Bush electoral opponents surrounding 's' for society.

16a  I have put Purse as it rhymes with verse and has something to do with lips.I could be wrong though.

I had the same idea as you about purse - often these sounds like type clues depend where you live.  We scots often don't see the rhyme.  Gorsebush seems good so prose is not right but if you look at 12 which refers to 16 AND 17 you can see why prose seems appealing.

Purse and Gorsebush it is then

Have to wait until  Monday week to see if we are right unless someone comes up with something completely different.

Lines against the Irish is verse

V (against-versus) and Erse ( the Irish language)

One does 'purse' one's lips
