Are the Police allowed to speed?
I was stopped, pulled over and taken down the station by the police .... the basics of the story is here ... http://www.theanswerbank.co.uk/Law/Question490 882.html
Whilst giving me a lift back to my car (after I was released without charge) the copper started off doing 45-50mph in a 30mph limit
Now he wasn't on a call or anything, he was just taking me back to my car, are the police allowed to speed?
I was always under the impression that if the police are on a call or they are going to pull someone over then they are allowed to break the speed limit but if they are just pottering from A to B with no emergency involved then they must stick to the speed limit like anyone else.
I mentioned this at the time (as he was driving along) and he said that he didnt have to explain himself to me but he was an advanced driver and he was allowed to speed whenever he wanted (even if he wasnt on call) - funnily enough he did slow down to 30 - 35mph for the rest of the trip
How does the law stand on this?
- If he was lying do I have any options to persue this?

R1Man you are spot on
Paul22118 I feel aggrieved at the fact that my taxes are going towards a Police force that from my experience are for want of a better word "incompetent". Just through one jumped up prat who was out to get me ... HE ... wasted 6 officers, and 3 patrol cars time ... then when I had passed 2 breath tests ... HE ... decided to arrest me for drink driving and waste 2 officers and 1 cars time taking me to the station and then officers at the stations time for something it had already proved I hadn't done (ie drink driving).
I haven't told you half the story of his incompetency but I believe he could be done for breaching numerous police regulations, laws and my human rights.
Example 1
Unwrapping the breath tube in my sight so I can see that it hasnt been contaminated and then taking it out of my sight round the back of the car to attach it to the breathalizer and then bring it back and ask me to blow into it
- I am concerned that someone who is scared of the police could actually fall for this!!!
- When I mentioned this to him at the time his response was "I didn't do that I promise" - like I am going to take his word for it lol
I will admit that I probably shouldnt have posted his name but I will stand by everything I have said about this whole affair - It was a pathetic waste of police resources
AND verging on harrassment !!!

After speaking to the Inspector about my complaint against the officer - He is only allowed to speed whilst on an emergency call otherwise he is subject to the laws of the land like everybody else.
I now have to decide how I want to proceed with my complaint(s), whether to let them handle it locally i.e. he may get a slap on the wrist or if I want it referred i.e. its dealt with officially by head office and charges could be brought against the officer
Hmmmm, decissions, decissions, which way should I go ???

this is a little late but, yes, the goverment in general are alowed to speed at any time.police, security, all the way up the ladder the the most highest ranked person the law says that law enforcement in most states can speed without lights on some states require lights but most dont.i recently watches an office doing at least 50 in a 25 ran 2 stop signs and kept going like it was nothing.take video of excessive speeding stand up for your rights dont sign the ticket. the people run this country and the people can require that police have lights on all time while speeding.I got stop for a traffic ticket and the offier drew his gun on me. he hand cuffed me,took me to jail then released me. towed my car.im starting a campaign to change this any body interested in standing up for your rights send me a e mail [email protected] dont want my kid or someone elses kid to to get hit because some officer is dooing excesive speed.
