I have been sent some family photos via an email attachment from a family member. The files have the IMG prefix then a number and then JPEG at the end.

Why can't I open these files? Do you need special sofware to do this? All I know is the sender has a very old computer. Any help appreciated here.

Thanks for reading this!

Try renaming them to .jpg, rather than .jpeg - you should then be able to open them with Windows explorer
The best (free) program for viewing picture files is IrfanView. There's not much that it can't open!

Try right-clicking and then 'Open With', I find that either jpg or jpeg will open in Paint. Prefer Paintshop Pro of course but there are lots of freebies out there including 'Irfanview' as Buenchico says or go to Serif's site and download their (free) PhotoPlus etc.

or you can open .jpg and .jpeg files in internet explorer.

just go to File > Open > Browse, and find the file.
