The clue is definitley singular! I was thinking CABBAGE to begin with, but they are also green, and answer would have to pe plural!! Been a few on this crossword where the tense for the answer and question have been different, anyone else agree?

I agree with you,Johnamill. I would put cabbages,
I've just started this week's crossword and found several instances where the answer to an adjective was a noun, or a verb!!Think I'll give up.Amateur setters who perhaps don't know their grammar?
I agree with you , it usually is not too bad but this week it is terrible
