Microphone not working

Please can someone help - I have a Packard Bell desktop pc, and need to use headphones and a microphone on it this afternoon! I have plugged the headset into the top socket (with the headphones on) and the bottom one into the lower socket, and have been trying to record anything using the Sound recorder in the Accessories menu, but nothing appears to be recording! Any help very gratefully received!

Thank you both for your answers - I'd forgotten to change the level on the microphone! All working now - thanks again.
