Is it possible for a building to have no name or number

From a land registry point of view?

As an example, my local Tescos does not appear to have a number attached to it - just the name of the company and then the road

On the other hand, the local B&Q (similar size building) does have a number according to directory enquiries.

So is there a legal requirement to have a name / number?

I doubt if the farm labourers or the lord of the manor knew about the new rules though. We are a bit out in the sticks and behind the times out here in North Norfolk ;o)

I lived on a farm for 14 years before moving to where I am now. We had no name nor number. Even the road name didn't have an official name, so everyone called it the Main Road being as it was, well the main (and only) road through that village.

Like Lottie, Lincolnshire is very similar to Norfolk in its backward ways when it comes to houses out in t'sticks.

We did have one helluva job with mail sometimes though - particularly mail order.

By the looks of it, that act only applies to towns and cities so rural properties would not be caught. It's far easier in cities and towns though - most streets have names. Once you get out in the back of beyond most roads do not have names and are just known by local custom.

It's obviously not been a problem! Maybe choose your own number and confuse your postman. Anything you like...

My house is 400+y and derelict when we purchased it. My address is just 'The old house'.

He he Salla. The sat nav system takes delivery drivers through a forge and then up a farm track into a field!! Then they phone me and ask me where the bleep bleep bleep house is!!!!

Number not required, though it will have a post code. Buckingham Palace doesn't have a number.

Street naming and numbering provisions are contained in sections 64 and 65 of the Town Improvement Clauses Act 1847 and only apply to those authorities having formally adopted the Act. These provisions are discretionary, so where the authority has chosen to impose numbering "as they think fit" can enforce said numbering.

See if you can do something about the traffic lights while you're at it .It's dice with death for the next month or so by the look of it .I've had to steer several old dears across the roads already and I'm no spring chicken :)
Typical of our town scoundrels to nit pick over numbering while there are far more important issues going on re the harbour , pier and the loss of the coastguard .
