it's absolutely normal to get referred otherwise how would anyone find out what their lump is? no gp can say what a breast lump is just by feeling it. all lumps have to be treated as if they're suspect and be referred.
kitty, i've had about 20 breast lumps over the years, all have been treated as if they were suspect, each time i found one i was referred...and every time they turned out to be cysts. but i was told time and time again not to assume that any lump i found was a cyst, to go to the doctor every time, and each time i was referred to the breast clinic at the hospital.
i don't know what the figures are but you have an extremely high chance that it's nothing serious.....but if (big IF) it is, then the sooner it's dealt with the better. you are doing exactly the right thing... and i'm not going to say don't worry because i know you will until you get the 'all clear' :o)
