Just to follow on - if he/she is having real problems - work through the exercises with them - be patient. (I know that can be hard)

Also you could speak to the school. they often run sessions designed to help you help your kids in maths and English.

and if they don't you could suggest it.

my 11 yr old has also struggled with basic skills but mainly spelling we found out that he was dyslexic have you checked to see if there is a reason behind it
