What details do you generally need to take with you on 1st day at a new job, bank account details, National Insurance maybe? Some form of identification?

Give them a ring and ask as they may need some official stuff, they may not.  Most places with passes prefer to take their own photos.  Normally they need your P45 so they can sort out your correct tax code.  Bank details so they can pay you.  Also take a nice mug and some milk and coffee.  And food just until you know where to find the best grub.

normally you would need to take your bank details, P45 and passport, but I'd suggest you call the HR department at your new job to check what else they might require.

If you're going to have a day's induction you might want to leave the mug and coffee at home until day 2.

What's a p45? Something from a previous job when you leave? What if it is your 1st job? Do you have a p45 in that case?
If it's your first job you won't have a P45, or probably even a National Insurance Number.  If it's your first time in employment, your employer should either be able to apply for a Nat. Ins. No. for you or give you a form to send off to apply for one.  First time employess won't yet have an Inland Revenue Coding Number either so tax may initially be deducted at Emergency Rate, which is higher, but it will subsequently be reduced to the correct level. Talk to your company Payroll Dept about this.   Take a notebook and pencil with you.  There may be a lot to learn and you won't necessarily remember everything you're told so make useful notes as you go along and when you get home at the end of the day, review them for a few moments to reinforce them in your memory.    Ask if there is a job description for your role which lists out everything expected of you and the tasks you will be expected to undertake.  If they weren't sent with your offer letter, make sure you are given a statement or booklet stating your full terms and conditions of employment so you know exactly where you stand, what the sickness payment scheme is,  and any other rules of your employment.   Good luck, and with one eye on the future, try and save 10% of your earnings while you can.  One day you may be glad you've developed this habit!
take everything along those lines to be on the safe side

What job is it and how old are you?

This makes a big difference.

Obviously the answers given are accurate and sensible.  But if you're turning up for your first day as a saturday girl in a cafe, it's a bit different to a 9-5 in an office.  I know that's obvious, but the answers so far don't entirely take that into account.

Not meaning to ruffle feathers. :-)

Sounds daft, but lunch money. Your lunch time will be a welcome break on your first day. Have enough to buy something decent. I still look forward to my break, years into my job.
As a bear minimum, no matter what the job, you should need to take your bank details (take an officical document like a cheque book if you have one or bank statement so that the numbers are clear) and a passport, to prove your eligibility to work in the UK. Also, if you don't have a P45 as it's your first job, you should make sure your employer gives you a form called a P46 - this will mean your tax code will be sorted out as soon as possible. Lots of other good ideas here too! You can probably never be too prepared for a new job!!! Good luck, hope you really enjoy it, let us all know how it goes!
