If a region 1 DVD says it has 'closed captions' on it. Will I be able to view the captions on my multi region DVD player in the UK, or will I need to buy some equipment that will let me see them ?

Closed captions are just what the Americans call subtitles. If you have a region free player and can play region 1 discs you shouldn't have any problem viewing the closed captions.
