No, definitely not.
However if you tax it online now and put a note in your windscreen, I believe that you have a couple of days while you are waiting for it to come in the post. Taxing on-line is really easy and means you don't have to ferret around looking for your documents - the website already knows your car.
5 days if you tax it on-line. Got to be the easiest site to use as well.
You can also tax it on the dog & bone.
Practical Answer? ...

They will not pester you for ages. In a couple of weeks, you will get a "Reminder".

As long as you re-tax within 1 month, you can go online and use the code on the Road Tax Renewal form, which should have been sent to you already.

If you don't retax with a month, then you have to phone your local DVLA office (NOT Swansea), and pay the arrears for the month you missed, and then go to the Post Office and buy a new disc which will be dated to the start of the month in which you pay.

Net effect ... you don't get away with any gaps in your road tax.

As a consequence of which ... you won't be pestered too much.

If the Police pull you up, they will just tell you to "Make sure you sort it out, Madam".

And yeah yeah ... I've been there (2 1/2 month late)
You have five working days if it's in the post......so get it online now!
Once you have done it online you don't need to put a note in the window - old tax disc should be left there as the police would be able to check from it that you have paid. They usually arrive in a couple of days.

Thanks for your replys folks.
I did it on-line last year and they charge an extra £2/3 which I think is taking the p1ss!!!
I think they only charge if you use a CC...
Lots of people would spend the CC charge on petrol driving to the Post Office to do it so it's really no more expensive and sooo much easier.
No! To play safe why not walk or get a lift to your issuing post-office taking all required documents. Don't take risks, even a neighbour who don't like you may report you. This is fastest and best.
But you can't use a CC in a Post Office so you might as well use the debit card you'd use there (or to get cash) online and still save the petrol
Solvit - doesn't matter. My car is displaying an out of date disc at the mo. As I payed for a new one before it ran out I'm covered.
OK um if you are sure you are right, but law says you must display up to date disc on the windscreen - even if you have it in your wallet. You may be pulled over and may then have your whole car checked-over e.g. everything from tyres to even eyesight!
It's stated on the DVLA website....and the reminder I think. The only reason I left it so late is because I left my car keys in a hotel room out of town so it missed it's MOT...Couldn't re-book until I got the keys back. MOT'd on Wednesday...failed...fixed on Thursday...taxed on Friday...ran out Monday.

I just put the MOT and the receipt of TAX in my glove box for the time being.
OK um, let's end our contribs there, just believe that most police are very reasonable but a few overstrict for reasons of their own. You have honest reasons which are understandable to me but there is an outside chance you may have had to argue your case in court - all up to questioner.
You are given 5 working days to receive your tax disc in the post. That's a fact..
