besides uploading videos on you tube.....a lot of people just upload a photo and add background music to the picture.
how do i go about doing this,,,,rather than upload a video with the music already on it.
hope that makes sense thanks.

You can't upload music directly because Youtube doesn't recognise music file formats, such as .mp3

You need to create a 'video' with just one picture in it. See here:

Remember though- you are supposed to either own the copyright or have the permission of the copyright owner. Which, of course includes the picture!

I used to use Sony Vegas 9 but I broke it. If you use Windows movie maker, it's very easy.
You just import the music file and your chosen picture into movie maker, drag them onto the timeline, grab the front end of the picture and drag it across until it's the same length as the music file.
