Retro Foods Making A Come Back

Hiya,
I upgraded my phone today in my local orange shop. The lady in the shop said that it would take 4-6 hours for my new sim (in my new phone) to be active, she said I had to wait till i lose signal on my current phone and then switch on my new one where i should then have coverage. I have waited over 6 hours and nothing has happened so i called orange who said it can take longer (funny they never tell you that in the shop), however the man at orange says that I need to have my new phone on so that it can receive service once they've processed it, but the woman at orange told me to keep my new phone off until i lost signal on my current one.
Basically I don't know what to do, I am inclined to believe the man on the helpdesk but wondered if anyone has had their phone upgraded and knows what to do?

She was told the change over would be very quick, less than an hour, but it took about 12 hours in all.
I would switch your phone on to see if you have the signal, if not switch it off again, then try again every couple of hours.
I work in the industry! Orange upgrades are the same as new connections i.e when the ugrade is put thro the system it can take up to 24 hours (the lady who quoted 6 hours should be shot.....twice)
Leave both switched on and the new phone will activate the same time the old one loses signal. The new phone will receive a selection of text messages that simply say 'sim update' theses messages need to be read, then MUST be deleted. Then switch the phone off then straight back on and everything will be active on your new phone
