I believe archeologists still take special Health & Safety precautions when opening up known Plague Pits - mass burials from the time of The Black Death etc

There is a potential risk that organisms will have survived that we may have no resistance to.

Yes, fascinating stuff. I agree with zheul, when scientists unwrap Egyptian mummies they have to watch out for bacteria etc lurking in the wrappings.
