It's not a question of whether it's fresh or not, I just can't bear the smell of beef when it's being browner off!! Once it's really well cooked, the smell disappears, but this is precisely why I have to eat beef/steak really well done (which in some restaurants just isn't the "done thing") It's a sort of ammonia type smell, I would just love to know what causes it?

Could it be the smell of the blood?
Maybe the meat your buying has been treated with ammonia

Strange isn't it. It smells fine to me but I hate preparing chicken for the same reason, the smell is just awful and makes me gag. Same with bananas, but that's another story.

I think, as with taste, we are all different in our perceptions.

It's a strange one! I know other people have had it too, they describe the same smell, it doesn't effect everyone! As a child I would have to leave the house when my mum crowned off mince, or put beef into roast ( was fine once it was cooked).

Can't bear the smell of tinned Sweetcorn either !
