As its a British crossword and that we invented the language, though its root is greek, I would go the o route........

US spelling is apnea, UK spelling is apnoea (as in Wiki link above).

well the issue may be settled if there is a 23d coming off the o or the a - that would make the decision very easy......chocaholic, over to you!!!!

The DT had one last week which was Arabic - berkha but the problem is that like a lot of Arabic words this is phonetic and variations include berka, burqa and burqha - I was taught (out there) that it was one of the latter two.......Maybe Andrew Carnegie had a point in wanting to simplify the bl--dy language.
