I heard an interview on the radio a few years back with a female singer who had sung First We Take Manhattan. I think it was Jennifer Warnes. She was asked what the attraction was in Cohen's music and said that there had to be room in music for melancholy, which I though was a good way of putting it. Maybe those who like his music are more rounded than those who listen to the same stuff all the time. Or maybe we're just sad b......s. Don't ask my wife which category I fit into.
Favourite tracks Sisters of Mercy and Waiting For The Miracle.
Melancholy - as opposed to depressing - as I said in my answer to this question on CB - it's an important distinction.
There is a local Sisters Of Mercy convent near where I live, and apparently the eldest nun, Sistrer Bernadette was mortally offended to see the band of the same name on Top Of The Pops. She was slightly molified when told that Andrew Eldritch had taken his band's name from the Leonard Cohen song of the same name, and then she went off on one at the thought of LC writing a song about nuns! Old people today ...
How can anyone not like Leonard? Silly question really. I have loved the man for 30 odd years, his lyrics are second to none. The personal passion in every word he writes just makes my skin tingle. I also love to hear other singers interpretations of LC. My hubby listened to Tower of Song before I told him they were covers and he loved the whole album but always said he didn't like LC. Must be his voice that doesn't do it for the unconverted.
Faves are definitely 'Coming back to You', 'Famous Blue Raincoat', 'If it be your Will'....too many to pick.
Just enjoy him and be glad you are one of the elite who 'get it'.
Now how about Tom Waits.........
