However, she didn't go part time in the job she had at the time, she moved to a new, part time, job. This probably isn't the same as your plan tigerthecat. It's taken my Mum years to regain the sort of job satisfaction she had before, but that may be because of the job change, rather than the hours cut.
If you're doing it to spend more time with your children (which you may or may not have, I don't know! :-) ) then go for it - and claim all the WTC and CTCs you can! :-)
