Which is best hospital in the North West for gynaecology? (suspected fibroids)

Not sure if this is the right place to ask but can't find any other online forums with this kind of topic.

I'm being referred to a consultant for suspected fibroids and wondered if anyone knows which hospitals in the north west are the best for this.

My nearest one it Royal Preston Hospital, but I think St Mary's in Manchester (where my family live, so easy to get to) is a specialist in fertility, gynaecology etc.

Does anyone have experience of the gynae services at either or these hospitals or any others in the north west?

Any advice would be appreciated.

My grandson was born in Royal Preston and I had to deliver him cos the midwives didn't respond to the bell and were no where in sight. My mum was born at St Mary's in 1928 10 weeks premature and weighed 5ibs but because they were the first hospital to use foil to keep premature babies warm she survived. Go to St mary's

Can you find out from the NHS Choices website what expertise the consultants have from each hospital? I had my fibroid embolised about 6 years ago from my local hospital and I was very pleased with the results. At that time there were not many places that specialised in embolisation but my hospital did the procedure so I went there. As far as preliminary gynae is concerned I would think it`s all much of a muchness (to coin a phrase)

Hi - I don't live in your area but I hope I can help put your mind at rest.
If this is your first appointment I think you'll find most gynae consultants able to offer pretty good advice. About 40% of women have fibroids, so its not so unusual that you need to look far for a specialist. You're most likley to be given a simple ultra scan - that used on pregant ladies, and the treatment or lack of it will depend on your age and the symptoms. I hope the symptoms are not causing you too many problems and wish you well at whichever hospital you visit.

Thanks for that. Probably getting myself all stressed for nothing! Have had gynae issues causing horrible problems, pain and affecting my life for 20 years and only now that I'm pushing 40 am I finally doing anything about it.

I probably just need to take a deep breath and book into the nearest hospital!

Do you mean the "best hospital" or the "best doctor?"

Surely your GP will know.

Sqad - you would think they would but all she did when I asked for a referral (yes, I had to ask) was give me a ticking off for being childless at 37. I'm now looking for a new GP.

I would try the Women´s Hospital in Liverpool.
