JTH...well, I disagree.
I looked at this 300year old painting very closely and could only find one child that may or may not be inebriated and I would like to bring this topic onto a more practical level.
Doctors who worked in Casualty in the 50´s would certainly see the drunks appearing at the weekend, but not to the same level as we see today. Casualty departments have all on to cope with the drunks and other patients have to wait.
Liver problems and diabetes are now surfacing at a much younger age group and donor livers are hard to come by.
There IS a modern attitude towards the use and abuse of alcohol which has changed over the past 40years and this, at sometime must be recognized and addressed.

The point of the engraving is the damage that Beer and Gin do on a personal and societal level........
It was the same 'type' of person 300 years ago who believed that getting completely 'mashed' was desirable/fun. Whatever their reasons in Hogarth's day, they will be almost identical today.
That there appeared to be a brief hiatus in those rose-coloured days 40 years ago is actually the surprise...........NOT that the situation has reverted back to its previous status quo.

JTH.....but the question is about childhood alcoholism...........are you suggesting that 40 years ago there was the same problem with childhood alcoholism.
In my opinion and experience, there wasn´t and I am suggesting that this change, should you accept this, is due to the attitude of alcohol to themselves and their children.

I'm not suggesting that there is any greater problem NOW than there was THEN.
With the greatest of respect, sqad, you weren't in every part of the UK 40 years ago. There were then, are now and will continue to be, pockets where the attitude to drink, drugs, anything that alters reality for you will not be the same as in the vast majority of minds....
