Applying to UEA
14 Answers
I know UEA is quite a good uni and according to the guardian for the kind of thing I want to do it's one of the best, but do I just think it's better than it is because it's my nearest and so i hear about it the most?

University should be a 'total immersion experience', not just a place of study. Making new friends, learning to live independently and some (possibly rather wild!) socialising are just as important as learning new facts. When I was teaching 6th formers, and giving them advice on FE choices, I always STRONGLY recommended that they shouldn't even consider any university which was within commuting distance from home (or where they could reasonably expected, by their parents, to return home on most weekends). I used a 150-mile radius as a rough rule of thumb.
If you really want to get the best from university (and that means really ENJOYING it!), you should delete UEA from your list.
Chris
(PS: I've got nothing against UEA. It's got a world-class reputation in environmental sciences, but I still don't think that it's the right place for you, Molly)

Maidup it's 2nd best for earth and marine sciences, 12th for geography and environmental subjects and 14th for biosciences 9according to the guardian) which is better than all the others (Brighton, bangor, portsmouth, plymouth and southampton)!!
Fair point chris, but it's expensive to live on the south coast . . .

Yes it's a very good Uni with a good reputation in the kind of thing you want to do Molly.
Don't altogether agree with you Chris before not all students are alike or need the total experience of University. My son (who boarded at school from the age of 11) went to University a long way away and found the general student life totally dreadful and the majority of students quite juvenile in their socialising activities. He ended up socialisation with people who were not students!!
But, of course, there are finances to think about.
Personally, I think Molly should choose the best Uni. for what she wants to do regardless of it's position though.
Maidup, I can confirm that Molly is correct in saying that UEA has a fantastic reputation for Marine and earth sciences.

Hi Molly - I think you have answered your own question. You are in a much better than most of us to know which uni is best for your studies but its actualy quite useful that you have some uncertainties. Its better than having your heart set on one place and one place only.
A handful of people acheive a place at thier first choice. A larger number are offered at their second choice and many more go through clearing. So continue with your research and visit where you can but keep your options open a little up to the final stage.
