Why are guinea pigs so called?

It's not certain why the name came about. There is a suggestion that it may be because they look like animals called Guinea hogs, so called because they were found in Guinea, the country in West Africa. Another suggestion is that it may just be because the descriptive use of the name 'Guinea' often meant 'coming from any distant, faraway place'.

Not sure if this is true but....

When they were first exported from South America they were sold for one Guinea.
