For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.According to my dictionary, it is the past tense of shrive. To shrive is to submit oneself for confession to a priest. Shrovetide was the Sunday, Monday and Tuesday for doing this, presumably so you were nicely absolved and ready for Lent, which starts on Ash Wednesday. So basically you had to have been shriven by Shrove Tuesday.
