Windows XP to Windows Vista
I am using a Sony Vaio laptop which has a little sticker telling me it is Vista capable
While I am perfectly happy with XP am wondering when I will have to upgrade to Vista as XP is some years old now.
Or would it be possible to download Windows 7 into it?
I find I do prefer XP..so would prefer to stick with it until I will have no choice but to upgrade.

We have two desktop PCs next to each other in our house for all the family to use.
One runs Vista the other runs W7.
I can use either depending on who is on the other one, and when I am using Vista it is hardly any different from using W7.
I bet most users would hardly notice a difference if you sat them down in front of Vista and said it was W7.
I think some people say "Vista is crap" because everybody else says it.

VHG...
To be fair here, you are an advanced user. being honest how much time do you think it would get you to make a default install of Vista usable compared to Win7?
I acknowledge they are essentially the same under the skin, but where do you draw the line between a service pack and a new OS?.... I expect the answer to that is lead by finance and (probably more so in this case) marketing.

That may well be the case, but having run Vista on a machine that was specially built to be Vista compatible, and then wiped it and installed Win7, the reason that I say "Vista is crap", is quite simply that Vista a crap.
Most of my clients who bought the odd Vista machine decided to delay the roll-out within their organisations, and "downgrade" the new machines to XP. Most of them are now happily rolling out Windows 7.
