Pen y Ghent name ?

On Saturday we walked up Pen y ghent. We have been up a few times and the view never ceases to amaze me. It was a lovely morning and the view were fantastic.

I just wondered where the name Pen y ghent originates. it sounds welsh. I have googled it and there is some weird explanation on Wikipedia that I dont understand

Has anyone else been up there ? Its fantastic isnt it ? Does anyone live nearby there, if so, lucky you. Its lovely all around that area.

This looks pretty clear from wiki - you're right that it's Welsh.

In the Cumbric language 'Pen' presumably meant hill or head, but 'ghent' is more obscure. It could be taken to be edge or border. The name "Pen-y-ghent" could therefore mean Hill on the border. Alternatively, it could be mean 'wind' or 'winds' - from the closest Welsh language translation as 'gwynt'. Thus it might mean simply 'Head of the Winds'. It is also acceptable to write it as Pen y Ghent not Pen-y-Ghent.

We walked up Ingleborough (think thats correct spelling) last year on a fabulous sunny day.
It is a lovely part of the country.
