Does anybody know what size rsj's are needed for a garage conversion being knocked into the lounge - the size of the garage is 16 ft x 8ft. Once knocked through it will take the size of the room to 19ft x 16ft.

about 7-8" overhang I think.
i would expect that this is where your structural engineer will help as they will know the weight and stresses that the beams will have to support.

yes redcrx but they also charge a grand to tell you !
They don't.........
but if it saves you putting in wroong one and having your home collapse isnt it wise to get the right info for your home??

Building Control at The Council have to pass it anyway, so doubt they would pass a wrong rsj size. How much do structural engineers cost then jackthehat? I have been told almost a grand, perhaps I am wrong. Considering the conversion is only costing £5k seems quite high.
If you need a S/E to calculate one beam (what is above the wall you want to remove ?) the chap I use charges about £ 100.

Ok thanks. I have obviously been given very wrong information. I will start ringing SE's. Thank you for your help.
Queenie .......... it's not just the size they'll want to see, it's the calculations as well. They sometimes have them confirmed by another SE then.

If you don't know of anyone locally, I had some done online once, when I was in a hurry. It cost £150 for three beams, so £100 sounds about right.
They have to calculate the loading on the beam. It can vary from job to job.
