Why exactly are we fighting in this war?

Is it because Britain have been threatened, or simply because our Prime Minister feels like he wants to get involved with it all?

Are we protecting the Libyan people or have we been threatened by Gadaffi. I'm confused!

If it's because we are protecting the Libyans, i think it's shocking. As much as it's a sad state of affairs that these people are suffering, surely our soldiers are suffering too by risking their life in a fight that wasn't supposed to be ours?

Am i totally wrong, as i know nothing about this, and this is why i'm asking?

it's all scary, so i'd like to know. <3

The question to ask is why are we involved in Libya when Bahrain and Saudi are doing exactly the same.

Dave says what we are doing is justified to get rid of a despot, so will Robert Mugabee be next.

I think the word is Hypercritical.

why should we put up with all the cutbacks etc if Britain has enough funds to go to war yet again ? its madness.

The official reason is this people in Libya, inspired by an uprising in Tunisia, rose up in an attempt to overthrow Gadaffi. Gadaffi his hit back violently and is using every means at his disposal to kill and smash the rebellion.

Dave has insisted that there should be a no fly zone thus preventing Gaddffi's air force from bombing civilians. However there are already reports that allied air action has caused the death of civillians. This of course will be called "collateral damage", you can't make an omellette without breaking eggs etc.

In the meantime in Bahrain and Saudi arabia there are revolts which have been equally brutaly put down. However reporting is sketchy at best and the are no allied actions over this.

Also as I said Dave justifys this by saying we have to get rid of a despot, meanwhile in Zimbabwe Robert Mugabee kills people willy nilly and Dave stays shtum.

This is why i'm questioning our involvement davethedog.

I bet it'd be a different story if it was Daves son the would eventually be fighting.

As i stated before, i know it's awful what's happening over there, but why can't we just butt out for once and live peacefully.

God knows what it's going to be like when my children grow up, if indeed they get that far, when we're risking everything for others :-(

Well the easy answer to why Libya but not Zimbabwe is probably that it is only the Libyan oil reserves which lead the West to get involved in the first place - Oil reserves in Libya are the largest in Africa and the ninth largest in the world with 41.5 billion barrels (6.60×109 m3) as of 2007. Oil production was 1.8 million barrels per day (290×103 m3/d) as of 2006 17:56 Sun 20th Mar 2011

Libya & Zimbabwe are totally different. UK was never a colonial power in Libya. If UK starts doing things like this in Zimbabwe it would definitely make things worse there.

I have also questioned the fact that we steam in to assist Libya, while Mugabi has continued to crush his people for deecades, unchecked.

I'm all for supporting innocent civilains, just let's be even-handed about where we do it shall we?

The point is that we are in armed intervention. We don't need to be oil embargos, UN sanctions and I am sure many other "threats" could of been imposed.

I was using Mugabee as a despot, what about Bahrain and Saudi not even a statement of condemnation.

Two years ago, people were dying of TB and Political brutality.....inflation of 2000%......power is being shared with Morgan somebody or other...................has anybody ANY up to date information on Zimbabwe?
