Converting docx to doc

At work we use Office 2003 and occasionally receive 2007 docs via email. I downloaded the converter (from Microsoft) on my PC which works fine. I downloaded the converter to a colleagues pc but it won't work. i tried a converter from another site with the same results. We have tried to open several Word documents but the message ' the selected file is not a valid Microsoft Office Document imaging file' appears each time.
We are networked and using XP.

Any advice please?

Ned to specify what files you are trying to open.
You only need one converter .. and the Microsoft "Format Converter" is the baby.

they are basic word documents - text only.
