how can i remove black tar from cream 100% wool carpet

When I was at school in 1978, I fell in the newly tarred schoolyard and as a result I was covered in the stuff (bitumin). Amazingly, my mam just used normal washing powders and it brought every bit out of my clothes. I'll ask her if she used anything else and get back to you...

By the way, that was one of the most embarrassing moments of my life when I fell over in that...!
