film file too big for dvd?

Hi all just downloaded an old film i have been after (avi) file,its only 1hr 24 mins long i am trying to burn it to dvd using nero 10 its telling me the file is to big to fit on the dvd,
actual size is 4.97gb trying to fit on 4.7 dvd blank disc how can i make it fit the dvd please

Of course it's not DVD format.
You started with an avi file .. To change this to DVD format means that the whole movie has to be re-rendered into MPEG2 format .. and the DVD authoring with a software conversion pprogram.
So you are playing the file with a dvd player that will play avi, jpg, mp3 files.
To make a proper DVD requires the conversion program.
DVD format is nothing to do with the burning process.
