Accessing local Archives

I want to find some details regarding a property in Wallingford, Oxon. Someone told me I need to access the local archives. What are these? How do I get my hands on them? can they be accessed over the net? or does anyone have any further ideas! It's historical details I need.....(further details available...just ask)!!

You can find out who owns the property here (if the land is registered) http://www.landreg.gov.uk or you could try this site for finding out about it's history http://www.house-detectives.co.uk/ (I've never used the second site so don't know if it's any good !!)
