make an appointment to see the manager and lodge a formal complaint.
Whenever I've taken ID into a branch they have taken a copy, stamped it as a true copy, and returned the originals to me. I assume they send their certified copy to their head office/processing centre.
Did they keep your originals?
give them them again? go to a different bank?

They have lost the originals, if they can't find them, they say may have been shredded??
Data protection is a major security is it not.
I'm not sure why they'd take originals.
I'm not doubting you- I'm just surprised.
Did you get a receipt for them. Do they deny receiving them or have they accepted they've lost them.
I'd complain, but if you still want this account I'd take in more ID and insist they copy it, certify it and return it to you
Send strong letter of complain to branch manager, and advise you want compensation for the cost of replacing the original items and your time. Managers name should be on display in the Banking Hall somewhere.

Did you take the id into the branch or did you post them? If you took them into the branch i can't understand why they would keep them. They would take a copy and stamp it as original seen/certified copy. If you posted them they are usually scanned onto a holding system and the originals posted back.
Which bank is this? Just so I can avoid them.
I assume, if what you say is correct (and I have to say it does sound a little odd), that the ID you took was simply a copy of a household bill or a Council Tax Demand, because you wouldn't have had two passports or drivers licences to show as ID, would you?

Maybe, next time, don't leave the originals with them?
