Recording TV

I want to buy a recorder to record TV - but I don't want one with built in freeview as I have freeview on my TV already ..... and the last recorder had freeview and it won't tune well in my area (but my TV tunes fine) ...... which one would Abers recommend please? TIA

If the only TV signals you are currently receiving are Freeview then you need a Freeview + Box and Tune it in so that it corresponds to your TV.

Most recorders these days have freeview built in so I would imagine your coice would be limited.

If your TV tunes fine then I can not understand why the recorder why the recorder wont unless you have them wired up strangely.

The Humax range of digital recorders are some of the best around and out perform the more well known brands

Sorry Redman - not with you. Have been told just need recorder (just like we used to have a VHS recorder and anologue TV) and can record the TV Freeview channels ......... is this not the case? Please explain in laymans terms if you can as am a technophobe!!

Your VHS recorder still had to be tuned into the Analogue channels, it did not record what was on the actual tv, so just as an old VHS machine needed an analogue tuner built in modern recorders need a digital tuner built in.

The-HouseHusband has just recommended Humax which is a good buy.
You need a Digital recorder with inbuilt freeview so that you can tune it in, in the same way as you tune your TV. Your TV Freeview needs retuning monthly as new Channels come on air and others are discontinued or moved. Tune your Freeview Digi Box recorder in the same way.
Aerial in to Digi Box first then into TV, connect them by scart Lead as well.

By way of explanation, let's go back to the good old days when you had an analogue TV with a VCR. Both devices had had an analogue TV tuner built into them. So you could record one channel while watching another. (i.e. you need TWO tuners, not one).

If you could get a recording device (PVR, DVD recoprder, or whatever) without a Freeview tuner built into it [which I doubt anyway], you'll only have one tuner (in your TV set), so you'll only be able to record the channel which you're watching. Further, if you want to record something while you're out you'll have to leave the TV switched on (otherwise you'll have switched the tuner off).

That previous paragraph assumes that your TV set is actually capable of sending the signal from its tuner to an external device. (Not all TVs do that). If it can't, you wouldn't be able to record anything using a recording device without its own tuner.

Buy a 'normal' recording device (with its own tuner built in). If the signal strength isn't god enough for it to tune signals properly, try a cheap signal booster or look into getting your aerial system upgraded.
