Access list control implies the router. Presumably as it's wireless there's a wireless router. Access lists are a basic way of restricting traffic in and out of a router.

Are there other computers connected ? Do they have access ? What model of router is it ?

Yes it's a wireles router it's a Netgear DG843G. There are two other computer conected to this router via LAN's although I have used them wireless before too. I was trying to connect using a network card which I've used in the past on my own laptop with no problems. I've deleted and relisted the mac number of the network card to try and get it to work but still no result.
Are you using NAT ? Do you have a fixed IP address on the PC which you are trying to connect ?

If I remember correctly, the Netgear stuff uses a list of 'know' or 'trusted' MAC addresses in an access list. This option is normally disabled on the router so I guess it's a case of turning it off or adding the MAC to the list.

Hope that helps - forget about the NAT question above.
