What to plant??

I was given a lovely planter made of old decking; its big, about 3ft square and divided into 3x3 sections with other planks of decking within. Can you advise what I fill these 9 boxes with?? I know certain plants mix well together. I am not the greatest gardener but willing to learn. I fancy a herb and veg mix ideally.

Herbs and salad leaves, and perhaps some edible flowers for added colour?

Read the question & the first thing that came to mind was herbs - as the lovely mrs_o had already said.

Can't beat a nice little herb garden sunflower.

I agree with Mrs O and Smudge - can't beat herbs fresh from the garden. One word of warning, though - be very careful about Mint. Its roots get everywhere, so unless there is an absolutely solid division around one of the boxes, avoid it. If you want some colour, howabout planting some trailing lobelia at the edge of the end boxes.

Oh yes Pumbah, the dreaded mint! Usually best to grow that alone in a pot, or in one section of the wooden planter.

I've just bought some borage seeds to plant around my herb garden. The flowers are very pretty AND edible
I agree about the mint - I'd plant it separately in a tub

I love borage too mrs_o. It looks really nice when growing in & around my fairy/pixie garden;o}

we like wild garlic or ramsons, but it's as bad as mint for spreading.

Yes it is, it has relly pretty edible flowers too

some Nasturtiums would add colour and you can also add the leaves to salads
