Thinking of having a golf gti petrol lpg converted.Does anyone know what difference it would make to the car tax and insurance?

Nothing as far as tax is concerned.

For insurance, it is classed as a modification (and must be declared as such) and not all companies will cover it. You will need the certificate of conformity from the installer to show whoever does eventually insure it..

To be honest, I didn't think diesels could be converted but I've just googled it and they can. The saving isn't as much as for a petrol car though.

Diesels aren't converted .. it is added .. or you change the engine!
GTi's go well on gas. We did a GTi turbo once .. flying machine.
Old Gti's with K Jetronic were also great.
Make sure you have an LPGA certificate with it. I'm a member of LPGA actually .. If you need, I'll elaborate.
Tax .. nothing, as even changing Registration Doc to alternative or duel fuel makes no odds. Insurance may/will need to see copy of the PLGA certificate issued by the converter .. or you can do yourself and get it inspected and certificate issued.

Ones that have Duel Fuel or Alternative Fuel in the log book and were converted under the government Powershift program which ended a few years ago maybe. An aftermarket conversion cannot have.
