(leaving aside that boring is not needed and is misleading not cryptic). And given that lemans doesn’t exist in real English I thought 4426 was back to the ST cryptic at its inaccurate worst. Cheers Sean

Leman - Lover/sweetheart....and as the clue said 'Old' meaning archaic English

I have read that the Sunday Times now has a new crossword editor so maybe he'll tighten things up.
