I used to visit Canvey Island regularly. A friend’s parents had a caravan at Leigh Beck. I fell into the sea there in February or March 1968. I had my full winter scooter gear on (full one-piece combination – vest and longjohns combined; flannelette pyjamas top and bottom; thick shirt; jumper; jeans; two pairs of socks; desert boots; scarf; two pairs of gloves ). Fortunately one of my mates was holding my crash helmet as I was walking along the sea wall (as you do) when a wave knocked me off. My mates managed to drag me out and I had to drive back home (about 40 miiles) somewhat wet. I have not been back since but recall that it is definitely an island. At that time there was just a small swing bridge near South Benfleet Station.
The construction of the West India Docks saw the peninsular of the Isle of Docks become truly an island. The docks stretched joined the two ends of the meander in the Thames with entrances controlled by locks. Many stories abound about how it got its name. Some say it is a corruption on “Isle of Dykes” (Dutch engineers reclaimed some land there in the 1600s) but this is not universally accepted.
