On the theme of the forthcoming Royal Wedding, I read this the other day about a past Royal Wedding, which amused me:-

"Permission to broadcast the Queen Mother and George VI's wedding in 1923 was refused by the Abbey for fear that 'men in taverns' would be listening with their hats on....."

Oh, how times have changed... The meaning of men 'keeping their hats on' these days has a completely different interpretation !!

Doff!!

Fluffs - don't be so bl00dy pedantic. Royalty were like God in those days - omnipresent or whatever the word is. Omnipotent? Always present. Like the Royal equivalent of Big Brother. Prior to 1984.
salla...indeed......at the conclusion of the film (pictures, flicks, cinema...whatever), the National Anthem was played and one was and usually did, stand up until it had finished.

Can you just imagine that today?

"What a load of monarchs" would be the reaction today.

I qutie like Prince Philip though. There's a rogue with a twinkle in his eye - now I wonder who he reminds me of???!!!!!!
salla...LOL

In Peterborough, there was on Lincoln Road, the Princess, a cinema with double seats on the back row........very popular. Get in one of those, coat over both pairs of legs...wow!

It was even better with a girl!...........sorry......couldn´t resist that ;-)

not being pedantic just being confused :-(
This is precisely what you get for educating the masses, they get all uppity and above their station. Not removing their hats in the presence of an image of the royal family indeed. Who do these subjects think they are?! Citizens or something?

If I were a shameful moral-less cougar, I could say I would quite happily remove my knickers in the presence of Prince Harry. But he is younger than my daughter, so that would just not be right.....
In those days, it was considered impolite for men to wear hats indoors.

Thank you sue.

Do you really have a lot of money? :-)
It would have only been the radio in 1923. Hardly the case for doffing their hats. (whichever kind).
In the cinema- As I recall there would be a mad rush at the end of the picture to avoid having to stand there while the National Anthem was played. A wonder someone wasn't trampled in the rush. Or perhaps there was and they just got brushed into the nearest row of seats.

I always wear a condom to the pub - gives me protection against the yobbos in there.
