Protons and neutrons are the basic building block of atoms, along with
electrons. The protons and neutrons are the particles that make up the
mass of the atom. (The electron has only a tiny fraction of the mass of the
other two). They make up the nucleus of the atom. The protons carry a positve
charge, while the neutron is neutrally charged (zero charge). The electrons
are the negatively charged particles. The proton number of an atom gives
the atom its place in the periodic table of elements. A normal atom has
equal numbers of protons and electrons, making the atom neutral
overall.
Hope this helps.
It's funny that you asked this today. This is what I'm teaching in my biology lecture tonight. Do you have any specific questions you need help with, or did you just need a definition? I think CTs explanation was very good.

Katrinaloo, Why on earth do you need to know what protons and neutrons are to do "an national diplomia in health and sociall care" (sic)?

Surely the time to have learnt this was during GSCE Physics (year one or two).
