Why do most British customers accept queuing...

.... in supermarkets, department stores etc?
Tonight I went to homebase for 3 items at 7pm and there was only one cashier till open. It took me 20 minutes to pay for my goods with a very unhappy cashier.
I then went to Tesco about 5 minutes away and the same thing happened there, just lots of people willing to hand their money over after queuing for 15/20 minutes to pay without complaining.
I gave up waiting and left my trolley with about £45.00 of goods to one side and walked out and finally arrived home about 8.45pm.
These Company's spend £££££££ advertising on tv and the newspapers to encourage us to shop at their business's, but if they spent the money on more staff, they may make more profit!!!!

The customers are always polite and the check out operators are very polite and helpful and on a personal note I always make a point of saying thank you to them when I leave. They are also patient with me if I fumble with payment and can't figure out which slot needs my card. All of the supermarkets in this area are the same and I do not think either customer or check-out operator would get very far if they weren't.
Teddy_boy,
In this day and age of health and safety, I have never heard of a member of staff not being allowed a Loo break, that is just ridicules.
I also have never seen a member of staff on the cashier tills or stacking shelves in a supermarket or department store relieving themselves on the floor :-)
