Retrieving a lost email password

Hello here is a difficult problem which would be great if anybody knows "how to"
About 4 years ago i lost my email address when the machine went in for a clean up.(I'd had a virus).
I recently sent an email to that old address and it didn't come back as undelivered, so i think it must be still active.
The problem is that i had not recorded the password in our "little black book" What a plonker.
Can anyone suggest how to retrieve it as ORANGE are no help at all.
