Do you think we are an odd family?
33 Answers
When I married Mr O I decided not to take his surname. Our 3 kids were given double barrelled surnames. The eldest now uses his dad's surname only, the middle child stayed double barrelled and the youngest has dropped his dad's surname. In a nutshell, all 3 kids have different surnames.
I've been talking to a pen-pusher in officialdom this morning and when I tried to explain all this there was a long pause before she said "what an odd family"

I see nothing odd in not wishing to take your husband's surname - but i do have a minor issue with the concept of double-barelling names.
It infers that some kind of dynasty is at work here, and the name must be preserved, rather than dying out naturally.
i think there are very few DB names that sound anything other than pretentious - you may be luckly with your children's DB, I don't know. If it's something obvious ancient and really posh, like Cavannagh-Mainwairing, or Blashford-Snell, that always sounds suitable rich and important, but some of the more mundane names just appear a little off if DB'd.
I have daughters, so when I peg it, my line of the Hughes dynasty will vanish, and i have no problem with that at all. Since only my youngest daughter shares my name - the other two are married - I would not dream of asking her to become Mrs Hughes-Lewis (Lewis-Hughes?) when she gets mattied in October.
That said, I am very much for live and let live, so this is purely a personal view.

My family are even odder - my parents, my brother, his wife and three children all have the same surname as me and the kitties.
I was helping a woman fill up a benefit claim form once and we got to the bit about her children - she had about five or six of them. They all had different fathers, not at all unusual these days, but she had a problem working out the details for the respective fathers of these offspring. ;-)
