which to use paint or varnish

does anyone know what the painters use on the new houses that are build with the wooden window frames and doors.....i know it is like a mahogany colour but is it colour varnish or paint.we have just varnished our front door but the colour varnish is not going any deeper in colour, and we want a deep finish. hope someone out there understands what i mean ha ha...thanks .

My house has neither,  the wood is mahogany colour to start with.  I have just painted my window frames and door with coloured varnish/wood stain and it did go a bit darker than it was before although as I said, the wood was pretty dark to start with.
