Through outlook express I received a Word document which I opened. This document needed substantial changes to it, which I did. Kept pressing Ctrl S to quick save it as I did them. Closed the document and now I can't find it. I realise now I should have saved the document first before I started making changes - is there anyway I can get all my work back, please? I've got a midday deadline.

not sure if it will work but have you tried opening recent documents (file open then click recent or history)

Tried that Fluffs! Think I am going to have to redo the wretched thing.
can't you have it re-sent to you?
no its defo saved somewhere, all mine go into a temp file somewhere (i do this on a regular basis) but mine are on my c drive under temp files i think but i can;t bloody find it now!

I've still got the original - its all the changes I have made that I need to recover!
open my computer right click on the C drive and select search, then either do a search for *.doc or for the filename if you know it.

Or

the file might be in a subfolder inside

C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\

so you can go looking for it there as well, you will need to set windows to show hidden files first. On the Tools menu in Windows Explorer, click Folder Options. Click the View tab. Under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders.

However, as this is strictly a temp file it may have been auto deleted already :(
right this may not work for you but found it ( i openeing an email word doc and saved it then closed it)

its in local disk c:
documents and setting
file name (me)
local settings
temporary internet
OLK27 (thats the file name its hiding in)

ob i have no idea if this will work for you as this is my work PC but it may be hiding in that area

good luck x

Thank you both. It's not there. What a total waste of time.
You may have been editing the original document within the email. Not too sure if that is actually possible.

What I think you should have done is to save the original document to your hard drive and then done your editing and saving that version.

That way you have the original version (for reference) and your amended version.

Yeah, I realise that now Magic. No worries, I'm just retyping the whole thing (having saved it first!!!)
When you opened it and started saving, did it open a box to Save As? If so, then you could find the directory. It must be somewhere if it was saving, but may have been having an issue if it had the same name as the original. That's why it should prompt you the first time, to say where you want to save it on your machine... Might be an Outlook Express thing. I suggest saving Word doc at download in future.

Sorry I can't be further help, hope youget it sorted..
Hey Barmaid, this may help if you're using Office 2007. I just tried it, it is easy to do. You don't need to modify anything, it just locates the directory for you.

"If you still have this problem and are using Microsoft Office 2007, run registry editor (regedit.exe) and scroll to the following location:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\1
2.0\Outlook\Security

Copy the contents of the "OutlookSecureTempFolder" key and paste it in the Windows Explorer to open the OutlookSecureTempFolder. Your file will most probably be here. This location can not be browsed to and can only be found from the registry as it is different for all users. e.g. for myself it is as follows:

D:\Users\keekus\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windo
ws\Temporary
Internet Files\Content.Outlook\R34DKK8O\"

However, from a brief Google it seems this is a common problem and this may be the only solution.
Fingers crossed.
open the doc from the email again.....watch where its automatically saved & follow to pick it up.
