"Can I have the long number beginning with 4, please?"
"And the expiry date?"
"And the three-digit code on the back of the card?"
"And finally, your Verified-by-Visa password and we're all done, madam"

Soaps, I didn't actually apply for this until it popped up one day when I was buying something online.
Mark, I wouldn't confirm my password to just anyone on the end of the phone. The bank would know my password anyway (they say they just want to confirm that I actually am Mrs.C).
There weren't wanting my VbV password. I've never been asked for that. The password I use for that is very similar to my online password though (tis the only way I can remember the bloomin' thing).

Glad to hear that, Mrs C. You'd be surprised just how readily people will divulge potentially sensitive information to just about anybody as if they were fire-proof. Loads of secure website ask for the answers to "secret" questions so that you can do things like reset a forgotten password, etc. Typically, these include your mother's maiden name, name of a grandparent, first pet's name, first school you attended, street you grew up on, etc.
I'm willing to be that a sizeable proportion of the replies the thread below fall into that category. I never use real data for those questions because it's so easy to find. I use song lyrics for all of those things.

Mark, there are some nasty peeps about and you're right about not divulging personal info.
There was something else the bank did.....they gave me the first half of my postcode and asked that I give them the second half.
And they asked if I would confirm my street name....they gave me the initial two letters to prove that they already knew this. I'd not heard these questions before. (This was as well as "What's your mother's maiden name?").

Mrs C, at that stage I would have asked for the name of the person calling, their phone number and the reason for their call. Then, and only if I truly believed the call to be genuine and was sufficiently interested in the reason for the call, I would have called them back. Ooh, baby, baby, it's a wild world...

I bank with the Co-op. Most of the time when I buy online I have to use the VbV system. However my bank uses about half a dozen secret questions which are asked at random whenever I make transaction. Sometimes they will also ask, for instance, for the 2nd, 5th and 8th number of a secret word.
I daresay anyone with the wherewithall could take my card and hack the details - you can never be too careful. That's why it's so important to report the loss//theft as soon as you notice it, so they can cancel your card and issue a new one.
