Dog grooming

Hi, having unsuccesfully tried to get an appointment at our usual groomer, we need to have a go ourselves, before we take her on holiday. We always brush her regularly but she needs a good trim and thining out, anyone have any idea on what tools we need to buy, and also can anyone recommend a basic grooming book. Thanks

what breed, what kind of coat? It might be that a furminator would be enough, they are amazing

It does depend on what breed/coat you are dealing with and what 'look' you are going for. I take care of my 2 myself, they are part Shih tzu and I could'nt afford to take them to a groomer their coat grows far too quickly.
I have found YouTube is a very good resource for practical demonstrations and often will tell you what equipment you need.
If you are planning on this being a one off and returning to the groomer next time then you won't want to spend too much. But if you do end up wanting to buy things such as clippers then get the best you can afford because it's false ecomomy otherwise.

Why does she need trimming, as wouldnt have thought a GSD x Collie's coat would need any other than a good brush and a bath to get rid of old coat, and possibly a trim round her feet/pads.

Furminators are brilliant, I use the cat version, but do watch out for price - I bought mine new for £6.99 on eBay, a cat catalogue I received recently was asking £31.00!

Thanks all, have just ordered a furminator, reviews are brilliant, hope it works for us.
Jules 77, she looks so much better with her coat trimmed she has the coat of a collie and it gets so long, she picks up so much gorse etc on her walks.

Good luck with the furminator, if she has the coat of a Rough Collie, a furminator wont touch it.

Thanks to woofgang and boxtops, my furminator arrived today and hubby has just spent an hour on our dog, absolutely brilliant, wish we had heard about them before, looked in our Pets at Home store and they were £42, found a deluxe version on Amazon £19 well worth the money. Thanks once again
