Labour wins all 33 seats in Manchester
Manchester's Liberal Democrats suffered a wipeout in a sensational night for the city’s ruling Labour group.
The Lib Dems lost all the seats they were defending on a shocking night for the party at Manchester Central.
It proved a momentous count for Labour – which won all 33 seats up for grabs, boosting its majority to the highest level in more than a quarter of a century.
The opposition lost key figures including group leader Simon Ashley, in Gorton South, after 19 years.
Former Lord Mayor Alison Firth lost Withington after 28 years as a councillor, and John Commons saw Levenshulme fall into Labour hands, ending 26 years on the council.
Paul Shannon, deputy leader of the Lib Dem group, said the result was worse than he had feared.
He said: “It’s been a terrible night and we’ve lost some really good councillors with over 120 years service to Manchester between them. The results across Greater Manchester and the north send a clear signal to the coalition that lessons need to be learned from tonight’s disaster.

And when the AV result delivers a resounding NO, they may decide that the only way back from extinction is to Break the coalition. Either that, or join the Labour Party.
The longer they keep the Tories in power, the worse it will get for the LibDems. Thete may not be a Party to Support the MPs if they try to ride it out until 2015.

I think this shows how short sighted and frankly stupid most of us are when we go to the polls. I don't like the Lib/Dems but they have done a lot of good in the councils they control and to punish them for what is happening in central government after only one year is crass stupidity. It is the same after every election the electorate expect instant
good results and it doesn't happen. In this case the liberal voters are acting like spoilt brats and lashing out at their own candidates. This tells me that the liberals are not fit to govern they lack the strength of character.

YEs, its a shame the council elections are used to punish central Government, no matter what the party.
Councillors are more about personality I find not so much the party, there are some good liberal councillors and it is a shame to see this happen.
Perhaps Blair was right when he once said the electorate are too thick to give a vote to on some issues.
