Apple iPad problem

Can anyone help please????? My son was in the middle of updating his iPad via synching, when the iPad cleared itself ready for re installation, his laptop he was synching to crashed and restarted, which then left his iPad with only factory settings. He has since been able to update the iPad but the last backup seems to be gone, so he has lost all his photos and games etc and his iPad is still on factory settings, does anyone have any ideas as to how we can possibly retrieve and restore these items?

if you use the windows search facility you might be able to find the photos. Purchased downloads are remembered by itunes and you should be able to download them again without paying...hope this helps.
