Macaroni fits , but I can't see the wordplay

Likewise Slaney Think spaghetti fits clue better (although neither are really noodles are they?)
Do you think we should be looking at 'noodle' being your head - as in use your noodle?

Thanks The Winner - I'm sure you are right, but I've not come across the Macaroni= Irish style before . I suppose it's the "extravagant or fanciful" meaning.
